Condoms Scheme
BACKCAN has been providing sexual health education and supporting the African and Caribbean community in Hackney. Between 2016 and 2020, Community African Network received funding from London Borough of Hackney Public Health through Hackney CVS for the Free Condom Project and directly from the London Borough of Hackney Public Health from April 2020.
Condom distribution for targeted communities for London borough of Hackney and city of London corporation. The Service provides free condoms and lubricant, and information, to Hackney and City of London residents aged 18+ from black ethnic groups, as well as other ethnic minority groups, through targeted outreach and engagement.
The aim of the service is to improve sexual and reproductive health outcomes among the target audience by promoting preventive practices and behaviours through targeted condom distribution, supportive conversations about sexual health, and accurate signposting to relevant services, which is intended to contribute to:
- the reduction of the transmission of HIV and other STIs (sexually transmitted infections)
- the reduction of unwanted pregnancies
- the promotion of safe sexual practices
- the reduction of avoidable health inequalities with regard to sexual and reproductive health
